Beauharnois generating station: One of a kind since 1932
This summer, take a free guided tour!

Located in Montérégie, Beauharnois generating station is a national historic site. Built in three phases, it’s Hydro-Québec’s longest facility, with 38 generating units extending over just under a kilometre! It’s also the most powerful run-of-river generating station in Hydro-Québec’s entire fleet. The canal on which it sits—which measures 1 km wide and 24 km long—was built with picks and shovels between 1929 and 1932, and is still used today to get to the St. Lawrence Seaway.

An out-of-the-ordinary excursion with family and friends

Whether you’re a history, science or technology buff, or just curious, Beauharnois generating station is sure to impress. Winner of several awards, its Art Deco architecture betokens the 1920s, an era when electricity was a luxury. The Art Deco style, beautiful and elegant, was a natural choice, encapsulating as it did the spirit of the times.

Visitors of every age will be fascinated to see the generating unit in action and hear its roar just above their heads. The guides will explain just how electricity is generated and gets to your home. A memorable experience guaranteed!

After your visit to Beauharnois, explore the Électrium, our electricity interpretation center in Sainte-Julie, which is also in Montérégie. Volta and Tesla, our two electric eels, are waiting to meet you!
