Symmes Inn Museum

Outaouais - Ottawa

Symmes Inn Museum
The Symmes Inn Museum, located in the Old Aylmer sector of Gatineau, is a regional history museum. Our permanent exhibition, "Symmes Inn: Window onto the Ottawa River" tells the story of the various roles played by the Ottawa River over the years. You will also find two temporary exhibits: "By Forests and Rivers, Men of Courage", which tells the story of the forestry industry in the Outaouais and "The Aylmer Great Fire of 1921", which is a tribute to the Volunteer Fire Brigade of the time and commemorates the 100th anniversary of this tragic event.

The Symmes Inn Museum recently became an accredited museum institution by the Ministère de la culture et des communications. The building, built in 1831 by Charles Symmes, founder of Aylmer, is classified as a historic monument by the Government of Quebec and designated a National Historic Site of Canada. Come and discover the history of the Outaouais, admission is free.
