Discover Kanatahkwèn:ke, Where Culture Comes to Life
Located in Kahnawake, Kanatahkwèn:ke Cultural Arts Center invites visitors to explore the history, traditions and living culture of the Kanien’kehá people. Bringing together a museum, cultural centre and performing arts venue, this destination offers different ways to discover the community’s heritage and artistic expression.
Kanatahkwèn:ke celebrates the history, identity and resilience of the Kanien’kehá:ka people of Kahnawà:ke, a community of approximately 8,000 people belonging to the Rotinonhsión (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy. Despite the cultural and language losses caused by centuries of colonization, the community remains committed to preserving and revitalizing its language, traditions and way of life.
The name Kanatahkwèn:ke means “where the village is picked up” in Kanien’kéha. It refers to the historic location of the village between 1696 and 1716. This is also where negotiations for the Great Peace of Montreal took place in August 1701, bringing an end to nearly a century of conflict between the Rotinonhsión, the early French and their allies.
