A Historic Mission in Kahnawà:ke
The mission’s history dates back to 1667, when the Kanien’kehá community established a settlement at Kentake, in the area now known as La Prairie. After several relocations, the community settled at its present location in 1716. A more permanent church was built there in 1720, followed by significant changes and renovations over the years.
Nearby, the remains of Fort Saint-Louis, built in 1725, offer another glimpse into the site’s past. Sections of the original stone walls can still be seen today, giving visitors an opportunity to discover another part of the mission’s history.
Discover the Story of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha
The mission is home to the National Shrine of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, known as the “Lily of the Mohawks.” Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, Saint Kateri holds an important place in the spiritual history of the community. Her tomb, located near the main altar of the church, is a place of prayer and reflection for visitors and pilgrims. A statue of the saint, created by Quebec sculptor Léo Arbour, adds to the significance of this special space.
