Paleomission: In Search of the Prehistoric Sloth
More than 10,000 years ago, massive mammals like mastodons, mammoths, and giant ground sloths roamed the continent. Then, they disappeared. Was it due to sudden climate shifts or the contact with humans? The mystery remains… Follow a team of Cuban and Quebec scientists deep into a submerged cave in western Cuba. In this extraordinary site—accessible only by diving—they study the remains of extinct sloths to better understand the mass extinctions that occurred at the end of the last Ice Age. This immersive exhibition invites visitors of all ages to dive into the world of paleontology: learn how scientists conduct research in extreme environments, discover the creatures that once inhabited the Americas, and explore how our environment has evolved over time. With interactive displays, striking visuals, and a path designed for both children and adults, Paleomission is a fun and educational adventure for the whole family.
The exhibition is open until December 2025.
A co-production of the Canada Research Chair in Climate and Environmental Change and Bishop’s University, developed by the Sherbrooke Museum of Nature and Science in partnership with the Museum of Natural History of Cuba.
