MONTREAL INSECTARIUM
The Insectarium contributes to change the way humans see insects in order for them to develop what we call “entomophilia” —the appreciation or valorization of insects. As they make their way through its exhibition spaces, this transformation will take place through a unique immersive visit experience!
Upon entering the Alcoves —inspired by the habitat of insects—, you can see the world as if you were an insect yourself. All your senses are on the alert: vibrations in the floor allow you to hear like insects; projected ultraviolet effects mimic an insect’s vision, while the configuration of the space encourages you to move around like insects, either by slipping through cracks or dangling on vertical rods.
After this first experience, it’s time for a tête-à-tête with fascinating insects in an intimate atmosphere, where they can be observed at leisure through 6 immersive vivariums. Prefer to keep your distance? No problem! Projections on the walls show insects up close, as if they were right there in front of you.
The Dome is a magical place with a nine-metre high cathedral ceiling that houses the naturalized collection of the Insectarium. On its rounded walls, you can observe some 3,000 specimens in a setting designed to bring out their magnificence. The top row of 36 display cases highlights their beauty in a chromatic arrangement, while the bottom row classifies the insects by evolutionary characteristics: "astonishing legs", "bizarre heads", "gigantic and minuscule", the choice of themes has been carefully thought out to allow visitors to appreciate and better understand the extraordinary beauty and diversity of insects, which is the result of their adaptability over time.
You then emerge from the ground to find yourself in the Great Vivarium, a place bathed in natural light that looks like a large greenhouse. Nowhere else in North America can you see so many species of living insects— many roaming freely— in one place all year round. Butterflies fly freely in a festival of moving colours. A place to reconnect with nature in a place where plants and insects—as well as humans dropping in for a visit—meet as equals and live in harmony.
